One of the things that drives me nuts is when people say things like, "Don't swallow that gum, because it won't come out the other end for another seven years." Like, really!? It comes out the other end in a couple of days, and anyone who stops to think about it will figure that out without even attempting it. Today I decided to shed light on some such myths and legends that have gotten so out of hand that people believe them to be facts.

1. Gum will get stuck in your digestive tract for 7 years if swallowed. BUSTED: Just as gum doesn't stick to your mouth when you chew it, it won't stick to your gut.

2. Bats are blind. BUSTED: All species of bats can see. They use echolocation, smell, and sight to hunt.

3. Tilt your head back during a nosebleed. BUSTED: You should actually tilt your head forward. Although tilting your head back will help you to avoid making a mess, it might send blood back down the throat, causing nausea.

4. Reading in dim light will ruin your eyes. BUSTED: The only thing it can cause is eyestrain, which is temporary. That being said, be honest with yourself; if you can't see the letters on the page, turn on the light. Your eyes will thank you for it.

5. A camel's hump holds water. BUSTED: It holds fat, and up to 80 pounds of it!
